“The History of Settlement at Tel Shalaf and the Battle of Eltekeh”

Supervisor: Dr. Alexander Fantalkin

The site of Tel Shalaf is located some 16 km North-west of ancient Ekron, 3 km West of modern Rehovot, and is 4 km North-east of Yavneh. The site is tentatively identified with Eltekeh, whose plains served as a place for the battle between the Egyptians of the 25th dynasty and Sennacherib of the Neo-Assyrian Empire during Sennacherib’s third campaign in 701 BCE. The research will focus on surveying the site of Tel Shalaf and constructing a history of settlement using the ceramics collected by Moshe Fischer and ItamarTaxel, and ceramics collected during survey in conjunction with Moshe Fischer and ItamarTaxel.
