Cultural contact between Mitanni and Southern Canaan during Egyptian Occupation: A study of Mitannian Cylinder Seals

Advisors: Prof. Oded Lipschits and Dr. Amir Gilan.

During the Late Bronze age, Southern Canaan was under Egyptian hegemony, however this period also sees an increase in Mitannian cylinder seals. This presents a compelling question, as the earlier stages of the Late Bronze age has both Mitanni and Egypt in conflict with each other, with the two only allying later at around the start of the 14th century.

I plan to examine the chronological and spatial distribution of these seals to serve as a window into the historical and political conditions of the region overtime; mainly focusing on differences in distribution between periods of rivalry and cooperation. Examining this distribution will offer an opportunity to test theories regarding the borders of Egyptian Canaan, presenting new evidence to suggest whether borders were free and open, or closed and strict.
